Four Fish
Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food by Paul Greenberg discusses the relationship that humans have with domestic and wild fish and the problems that arise from the urge to control the ocean.
Farmed Fish!
I have never considered eating them as an option, but (perhaps!) Greenburg is forcing me to reconsider this. I think we all need to eat less animal protein and that, in general, farmed fish is a bad idea. Greenberg makes some strong cases that force us to look at the collapse of the fishing industry - both from the perspective of the fisherman and scientist.
Greenberg left me questioning “are fish at their root expendable seafood or wildlife desperately in need of our compassion?”
I’m sticking to the little guys like anchovies when it comes to fish and clams and oysters when it comes to shellfish! Farmed oysters are actually good for replenishing the ponds and should be supported!
What to do if you don’t have time to read the book:
- Choose a good fish in the market that you know is environmentally sustainable — or at least more sustainable — it’s good for your own moral self and it’s good for your self-education.
- Go to Monterey Bay Aquarium “Food Watch” program.
