Raw Milk is Under Threat in Massachusetts

If you care about access to real food, this is important!

Facts - Where We Are

In January, the State sent out cease and desist orders to four buying clubs.  These buying clubs, for a fee, safely bring raw milk from the farms to consumers.

These clubs:

  • Provide to private members more than $700,000 directly to the pockets of small family farmers.
  • Have saved consumers from traveling up to 13 million miles on our roads.
  • Our state permitted farmers get $1.28 per gallon for raw milk from the milk industry.
  • Members of these clubs purchase milk from small family farmers at $7 to $10 per gallon.
  • Farmer income from two gallons of raw milk retailed from their farm roughly equates to 12.5 gallons sold to the tanker trucks.

The survival of these small farms is dependent on the outcome of the May 10th hearing.

David Gumpert, author of The Raw Milk Revolution: Behind America's Emerging Battle Over Food Rights, has written a conscise paper which I believe speaks clearly about the real issue and we asked him to be a part of our blog post this week - The Food Rights Firestorm Spreads: Is Big Dairy Helping Regulators Use MA as Test to Bust Raw Milk Buying Clubs?

Our Salute to Raw Milk page has much more information, including links to other resources and writings about raw milk.
